Bravo, Russell! I quit social media (except for leaving up my LinkedIn profile as an "online resume") in October 2022 and haven't looked back. I've grappled with whether to return for business reasons but have yet to find a legitimate excuse to spend the time.
Your post struck me particularly after reading Psalm 19 this morning, which proclaims that "the heavens declare the glory of God." All nature shows us that there is something—Someone—bigger and beyond ourselves, and each of those little details you mention are there to awaken us to it and to allow us to take delight in those engaged, embodied moments.
"I have become wary of machines that invite me to do their bidding rather than enabling my own agency." <- This is very Paul Kingsnorth. Have you read his "The Abbey of Misrule" newsletter?
He just wrapped up a long period of writing about technology's impact on the world and what he believes our response should be. He's a stellar writer with some unique perspectives.

I have not, but you're the second person to mention Kingsnorth to me recently. I'll check it out. Thanks for the kind comment, Sam!
