Interesting topic, Russell. I’m convinced that my love of hiking has come from reading fantasy novels as a teenager. I joined the army at 16, and imaging myself on a ring quest made those exercises across the Yorkshire moors in the pissing rain not just tolerable, but actually enjoyable. And that fusion of which you speak? I still get that now while listening to audiobooks while hiking. I can recall exactly where I was at specific sections of the fantasy books that I still love so well. Currently it’s Brandon Sanderson.
