What a lovely read, Russell. I would dearly like to read more Dickens and may very well plan to read a big novel in 2025. I have listened to the Patrick Stewart narration of A Christmas Carol a few times and that's my favourite way to enjoy this wonderful tale. I also once played the role of Fred in a local pantomime adaptation of the story and had a great time!
After noting your annual practice of reading this story, I made note on my own calendar to get a copy for this year. I finished my first annual reading this morning! And what to my wondering eyes should appear....but a few paragraphs of your reflections. Timely. Your insights align with several of mine from my first experience. The story, while short, is packed and I agree with your perspective on Dickens' skill as an author. He could not possibly have happened to omit mention of Scrooge's mother. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us!
A beautiful meditation on a wondrous story. The "ever so much kinder" line struck me hard. What story lies there? With Fan taking on the mother's role so early.
You've started something in our household - we're reading and discussing this marvelous novel all thanks to you!
It overjoys me to know you all are reading and discussing it, Jude! What a festive and sublime way to spend these holidays! Thank you for your kind words!
Wow. A cutting and very sad layer of Scrooge's character. Well done!
Once again, very well done!
